These apps may look a lot like Tinder, the U.S.-based app that lets users anonymously approve or reject matches with a simple swipe at first sight.

However the similarities stop there for Tinder’s homegrown Asian competitors.

The business owners behind these apps state dating in Asia is significantly diffent — swapping figures at a club or setting up just isn’t typical. These apps seek to produce an amiable, safe community for users to meet up with other folk that is interesting.

“Tinder is scarlet, whereas we simply take toned down colors like blue, purple, green — it calms,” said Joseph Phua, creator of Singapore-based dating application Paktor. “when you are with the software, that you don’t feel just like it really is something which’s tilting towards hookups — it is a option to satisfy new people.”
